On the night of 31 August 1939, the word ‘blitzkrieg’ was added to the dictionary. The German Luftwaffe was discharging incendiary bombs from the sky, while the Wehrmacht stormed the ground with heavy artillery. The Polish Army made a valiant effort, but they were outweighed in machinery, munitions, and manpower. By 14 September, the invading forces had them surrounded. There was no way out. The final defeat of Poland took place in a marshy area of the Bug River. The document of surrender was signed 6 October 1939. The Poles never accepted the term “Unconditional”.

My brother is adopted, but I can’t say and don’t want to say that my brother is adopted. If I say this, if I speak these words that I have long taken care to silence, I reduce my brother to a single categorical condition, a single essential attribute…A young couple, involved in the struggle against the military dictatorship in 1970s Argentina, must flee the country. The brutality and terror of the regime is closing in around them. Friends are being ‘disappeared’. Their names are on a list. Time is running out. When they leave, they take with them their infant son, adopted after years of trying for a child without success. They build a new life in Brazil and things change radically. The family grows as the couple have two more children: a son and a daughter.Resistance unfolds as an intimate portrayal of the formation of a family under extraordinary circumstances, told from the point of view of the youngest child. It’s an examination of identity, of family bonds, of the different forms that exile can take, of what it means to belong to a place, to a family, to your own past.Already winner of the Jabuti Award for Book of the Year 2016 (Brazil), the José Saramago Literary Prize 2017 (Portugal) and the Anna Seghers Prize 2018 (Germany), Resistance demonstrates remarkable courage and skill by one of Brazil’s rising literary stars.

Is resistance un-American? How far should resistance go? Courage and desperation have sparked instances of resistance since the dawn of civilization. Jesus, Thoreau, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King resisted the nonviolent way. Here for the record is a remarkably full discussion of instances of twentieth-century resistance to inform, inspire, and possibly instruct by example. Here are the frightening, inspiring stories of the anti-Nazi, anti-Communist, anti-war, anti-discrimination movements, and the individuals who have faced up to oppressors. “Resistance must begin with the self,” the author concludes—with the courage to say no when everyone expects us to say yes. Here, a well-known reporter of the deeds of dissenters, revolutionaries, rebels, and gadflies calls on his vast resources of observation and sympathy to help us take heart and turn the tide against our sea of troubles.

No treatment. No cure. No hope Once it seemed as though penicillin and other antibiotics had won humanity a lasting victory over harmful bacteria. But now hardier bugs, resistant to most common classes of antibiotics, are emerging–with potentially catastrophic consequences. When Dr. Catalina Lopez of the Center for Disease Control first receives a report of a lethal new “superbug” immune to all known antibiotics, she realizes that she has a major health crisis on her hands. An ultra-resistant form of group A strep is spreading like wildfire throughout hospitals and emergency rooms in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Doctors, lacking any effective way to combat the infection, can do nothing but stand by and watch their patients die, one after another. Dr. Graham Kilburn, an infectious disease specialist in Vancouver, is one such doctor. Desperate to contain the spread of the new superbug, he joins forces with Lina Lopez as they try to find some way to halt the growing epidemic. What they don’t realize is that shadowy forces are conspiring to spread the disease on purpose–and they will stop at nothing to avoid exposure. From the National Book Award–winning author comes a highly charged, stunningly original work of fiction—a passionate response to the changes shaping our country today. In nine fictional testimonies, men and women who have resisted the mainstream and who are now suddenly “parties of interest” to the government tell their stories. A young woman in Buenos Aires watches bitterly as her family dissolves in betrayal and illness, but chooses to seek a new understanding of compassion rather than revenge. A carpenter traveling in India changes his life when he explodes in an act of violence out of proportion to its cause. The beginning of the end of a man’s lifelong search for coherence is sparked by a Montana grizzly. A man blinded in the war in Vietnam wrestles with the implications of his actions as a soldier—and with innocence, both lost and regained. Punctuated with haunting images by acclaimed artist Alan Magee, Resistance is powerful fiction with enormous significance for our times.

In late December of 1941, two parachutists dropped into occupied Europe on a mission to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, an SS leader whom one contemporary called “the hidden pivot” of Nazi Germany.
Six months later, they succeeded.
This is the definitive telling of this oft-forgotten story—its fascinating background, its thrilling climax, and its tragic consequences.
