La présente édition (texte intégral), est établie à partir de la première édition qui paraît en deux volumes, Libraires J.P. Roret et H. Dupuy, à Paris le 20 mai 1832.Lu comme un pamphlet contre le mariage, Indiana (1832) lança la carrière littéraire de l’auteure.  Mariée, au sortir de l’adolescence, à un vieux colonel antipathique et autoritaire, Indiana se laisse courtiser par un jeune homme, Raymon de la Ramière, qui n’est qu’un séducteur peu fiable. Tout la disposait pourtant à être sauvée par l’amour. Indiana se trouve prise dans les turpitudes de la passion, car le désir du jeune homme se révèle bientôt d’un appétit plus redoutable encore que la brutalité de son mari repu. Oppressée dans son mariage, Indiana cherche une aventure : celle-ci achèvera de l’opprimer. Faisant partie des roman féministes de George Sand, Indiana (1832), bousculent les conventions sociales et magnifient la révolte des femmes en exposant les sentiments de ses contemporaines, chose exceptionnelle à l’époque et qui divisa aussi bien l’opinion publique que l’élite littéraire.
