A Time Best YA Book of All Time (2021) Anne Shirley is unforgettable, and this beautifully packaged edition of L.M. Montgomery’s classic novel is as memorable as its heroine. When Anne Shirley arrives at Green Gables, she surprises everyone: first of all, she’s a girl, even though Marilla Cuthbert and her brother Matthew specifically asked for an orphan boy to help around the farm. And second of all, she’s not just any girl: she has bright red hair, a wild imagination, and can talk a mile a minute. But she also has a sweet disposition and quick wit, and Anne (with an “e” of course—it’s so much more distinguished!) soon finds her place in Avonlea, making a friend in her neighbor Diana Barry and attending the local school, where she spurns the advances of the popular and handsome Gilbert Blythe when he commits the ultimate sin of making fun of her hair. Anne has a temper as fiery as her hair and a knack for finding trouble, and she also has a big heart and a positive attitude that affects everyone she meets. This classic and beloved story makes a wonderful gift and keepsake.

A classic coming-of-age story, Anne Shirley is a little orphan girl who brings the whole town of Avonlea together. Sacrificing her own desires for the well-being of her new family, Anne comes to learn that family means more than blood.
Matthew Cuthbert is painfully shy and devoted to his sister, Marilla. The Cuthberts run their family farm at Green Gables, with neither spouses nor children to distract them. So when the Cuthberts decide to adopt a child to help them on the farm, Matthew never imagines that he will forge an inseparable bond with her, and that she would have such a profound effect on him.
Anne of Green Gables tells the story of little Anne Shirley as she adapts to a new way of life. Set in the fictional community of Avonlea, Anne learns to navigate her new responsibilities on the farm with her adopted parents Mathew and Marilla. In addition to her farm life, Anne quickly makes friends at school, having no trouble expressing her ambitions and wild imagination in the classroom. With a big personality and an eagerness to please, Anne’s exuberant spirit livens up the community at Green Gables. Making life-long friendships with her closest pal Diana Barry, and instant hatred of Gilbert Blythe, who teases Anne about her wild red hair, Anne’s life in Avonlea is everything she ever hoped it would be.

Anne of Green Gables’ tells the tale of a little red headed orphaned girl, mistakenly sent to the Cutherbert’s farm on Prince Edward Island. Anne’s strong character and vivid imaginaton both help and hinder her as she makes her way through childhood in the pretty little town of Avonlea. This early work by Lucy Maud Montgomery was originally published in 1908 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on 30th November 1874, New London, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Her mother, Clara Woolner (Macneil), died before Lucy reached the age of two and so she was raised by her maternal grandparents in a family of wealthy Scottish immigrants. In 1908 Montgomery produced her first full-length novel, titled ‘Anne of Green Gables’. It was an instant success, and following it up with several sequels, Montgomery became a regular on the best-seller list and an international household name. Montgomery died in Toronto on 24th April 1942.

Life is forever changed at Green Gables, a tranquil farm on Canada’s Prince Edward Island, with the arrival of a redheaded chatterbox named Anne. The spirited, precocious 11-year-old orphan finds “scope for imagination” everywhere she looks, transforming the lives of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, her elderly guardians, with her merry doings and misadventures. Anne — spelled with an “e,” as she gravely informs new acquaintances — builds a world of enchantment around Green Gables and its surrounding woodlands, lakes, and valleys. Thanks to the freckle-faced girl’s imaginative musings, the rustic region’s natural wonders blossom into a fairyland of endless romance. Anne’s inspired prattle, goodwill, and joie de vivre win her a warm circle of friends, just as they have won the hearts of readers around the world. Since its first appearance in 1908, the novel has led generations of children to laugh and cry — but mostly laugh — along with this beloved story’s vivacious heroine. Now this inexpensive edition, complete and unabridged, introduces new readers to the ageless charm of a fanciful world made real by love and friendship. The inspiration for 2016 PBS movie and the 2017 CBC/Netflix Anne mini-series.
