Description

In this sequel to children’s classic Anne of Green Gables, the spirited young heroine starts on her path to adulthood as a schoolteacher. Having earned her teaching license at Queen’s Academy, sixteen-year-old Anne Shirley is ready to begin her new role as an instructor at the Avonlea school, not far from Green Gables farm. But is she ready for the responsibilities of young adulthood? Together with her old friends Gilbert Blythe and Diana Barry, Anne starts the Avonlea Village Improvement Society—only to discover that good intentions don’t always go according to plan. Meanwhile, Marilla Cuthbert, who took Anne in as a freckle-faced orphan, now finds herself caring for a pair of young twins who couldn’t be more opposite from each other. When Anne isn’t at school or lending Marilla a helping hand, she’s contending with her difficult new neighbor and his foul-mouthed parrot, getting overly involved in other people’s romances, and hoping that one day she’ll get to go to college. Since Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908, L. M. Montgomery’s novels featuring the irrepressible Anne Shirley have delighted readers of all ages and inspired numerous adaptions, including the beloved Netflix series Anne with an E.

Description

Avonlea’s new schoolma’am, at the age of 15, is barely older then her pupils. Anne earnestly strives to win the affection of every student while maintaining the decorum of her new role. Her irrepressible spirit and lively imagination, however, often sidetrack her into amusing mischief and mortifying scrapes, all eventually remedied by the warmth of friendship and goodwill. In this classic sequel to Anne of Green Gables, the author once again draws from girlhood memories of Prince Edward Island to portray the sweet, old-fashioned village of Avonlea, situated amid the natural beauty of the Canadian Maritimes. Although Anne and her friends and neighbors dwell in a bygone age of gaslight and horse-drawn carriages, Anne’s dreams of the future, lofty aspirations, and romantic visions make her a heroine for all ages. Modern readers continue to share her tribulations and triumphs in leading the village improvement society, adapting to the boisterous arrival at Green Gables of a pair of 6-year-old orphans, and searching always for the company of kindred spirits. Since Anne’s debut in 1908, generations of readers around the world have grown up with the starry-eyed young woman with the shining hair (please, call it auburn, not red). This inexpensive new edition of Anne’s further adventures ensures the continuation of a joyful tradition.

Description

Anne of Avonlea’ is the second novel in the ?Anne of Green Gables? series. It follows the grown up redhead as she enters maturity and develops as a young adult. Although Anne is now a responsible adult and teacher, she continues to get her self into all manner of imaginative predicaments. There are lots of adventures to be had with her new problematic neighbour, the twins and her band of trusty friends.

This early work by Lucy Maud Montgomery was originally published in 1909 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on 30th November 1874, New London, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Her mother, Clara Woolner (Macneil), died before Lucy reached the age of two and so she was raised by her maternal grandparents in a family of wealthy Scottish immigrants. In 1908 Montgomery produced her first full-length novel, titled ‘Anne of Green Gables’. It was an instant success, and following it up with several sequels, Montgomery became a regular on the best-seller list and an international household name. Montgomery died in Toronto on 24th April 1942.
